Nigeria stunned Australia 3-2 to secure top spot in Group B

In a thrilling encounter, Nigeria showcased their resilience and determination, rallying from a goal down to claim a remarkable 3-2 victory over hosts Australia, propelling them to the top of Group B. The match, held in Brisbane, proved to be a severe blow to Australia’s World Cup aspirations.

The first half saw Emily van Egmond’s precise finish granting the Matildas the lead, as they sought the victory that would secure their spot in the last 16. However, Nigeria responded swiftly, with Uchenna Kanu equalizing in a matter of seconds, leaving the teams level at the break.

As the second half commenced, Nigeria displayed a masterful counter-attacking strategy, catching the home side off-guard. Osinachi Ohale’s goal and a crucial contribution from substitute Asisat Oshoala furthered the Super Falcons’ advantage, stunning the massive crowd of over 40,000 at the Brisbane Stadium.

Despite a valiant effort from Australia, who managed to pull one back through Alanna Kennedy’s header during added time, it was not enough to alter the outcome. Nigeria held firm, securing the win and climbing to the top of the group on goal difference, leaving Canada trailing in second place with four points, while Australia remains on three points.

With this significant triumph, Nigeria finds itself in a strong position to qualify for the last 16. Having drawn 0-0 against Canada in their tournament opener, the jubilant Super Falcons are aware that a victory against the already eliminated Republic of Ireland in their final group match on Monday will guarantee their spot in the knockout stage. Meanwhile, Australia’s journey hangs in the balance, as they now face a must-win encounter against Olympic champions Canada in Melbourne to keep their World Cup dream alive.
